Sam Onkka
Hello
My name is Samantha, but you can call me Sam. My passion for mental health counseling isn't tied to a single event, but rather a deep-seated calling I've always felt. I believe the most valuable part of counseling is the therapeutic relationship itself—building a space of trust, empathy, and genuine connection. When you feel truly heard and understood, you are empowered to explore your emotions, confront challenges, and move toward growth.
Throughout my life, both personally and professionally, I've naturally gravitated towards roles involving meaningful connection with others. My background in customer service wasn't just a job, but a genuine opportunity to engage with people. These experiences have shown me the profound impact of human connection. I believe in the transformative power of having a safe space where individuals feel truly heard, understood, and supported. It's this belief that fuels my dedication to counseling.
Education
I am currently at graduate student at University of South Carolina's Counseling and Rehabilitation program and am expected to graduate summer of 2025. This program specializes in clinical rehabilitation counseling to develop clinical knowledge and skills in counseling to effectively work with persons who have disabilities, mental health disorders and addictions. I served my practicum and one internship in the inpatient units at Havenwyck Hospital and was responsible for conducing group therapy for children, teens, and adults struggling with moderate to severe dual diagnosis. I am now entering into my internship here at Pediatric and Adult Behavioral Counseling and am supervised under Dennielle McIver, MS LPC-S NCC CCTP.
Specialization and Approach
I provide counseling in a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore what matters most to you. I believe you are the expert on your own life, and I approach our work together with openness and empathy. My focus is on active listening, consistency, and respect, ensuring you feel heard and valued. I particularly enjoy working with children and young adults. Drawing from Adlerian and Narrative therapies, I help clients understand their unique life stories and identify their personal strengths. Together, we can explore patterns, identify inconsistencies, and gain insights as needed.
For You
My priority is creating a compassionate and non-judgmental space where your well-being comes first. Whether you're navigating anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, or seeking self-discovery, I'm here to support you. I understand that starting therapy can feel uncertain, and I want to acknowledge the courage it takes to begin this process. There's no "right" way to engage in therapy; it's a place where you can (and should!) be your authentic self. You deserve to achieve your mental health goals and have the support to reach them.
