Starting therapy can feel intimidating, especially if you aren’t sure what happens once you sit down or log on. At Pediatric and Adult Behavioral Counseling, we demystify the process so you can focus on your personal growth rather than the "unknowns." Here is exactly what you can expect when you begin your mental health journey with our team of professional counselors.
1. Simple Online Preparation
Before your first session, we ensure we are the best fit for your specific needs, including location preference, scheduling, and insurance coverage.
-
Initial Inquiry: Complete our [Online Intake Form] to help us match you with the right specialist.
-
Digital Documentation: If we are a good match for your goals, we will email you secure intake documents to complete electronically. This ensures we maximize our time together during your first appointment.
-
Child & Teen Support: For pediatric clients, we may provide age-appropriate self-assessments to be completed independently.
-
Scheduling your Intake: Once your information is reviewed, we will schedule your Intake Assessment. This is a 45–60 minute session held via secure Telehealth for all Michigan residents. If you prefer in office appointments, they will be scheduled after the assessment.
2. The First Session: Your Intake Assessment
Think of the first session as a structured conversation designed to build your roadmap to healing.
-
Deep Listening: We don’t just jump into "fixing." We listen to your history, current struggles, and the specific changes you want to see.
-
A Judgment-Free Zone: Whether you are navigating career burnout or deep-seated trauma, you are met with empathy. This is a safe container, not a clinical lecture.
-
Collaborative Goal Setting: By the end of this hour, we will have a clear, personalized treatment plan tailored to your life.
3. The Ongoing Process: Healing & Growth
Once the foundation is laid, the real work begins. We generally recommend weekly counseling sessions initially to build rapport and gain momentum.
-
Rapport Building: Trust is the most important factor in therapy. We prioritize a strong connection between you and your counselor.
-
Skill Building: You will learn tangible, evidence-based tools to manage ADHD, anxiety, depression, anger and stress in real-time.
-
Clinical Processing: We utilize specialized interventions to resolve trauma, improve executive functioning, and support your emotional regulation.
-
Adaptive Growth: We check in regularly. If an approach isn’t clicking, we pivot. You are the expert on your life; we are the experts on the clinical tools.
4. An Authentic Human Connection
We avoid the "blank wall" clinical approach. When you work with a therapist at Pediatric and Adult Behavioral Counseling, you can expect a professional who:
-
Engages Authentically: We bring our human selves to every session. We nod, we smile, and we interact with you genuinely.
-
Respects Your Autonomy: We provide clinical insights and guidance, but you always maintain the lead in your own life.
-
Provides Undivided Attention: During your 45–60 minute session, you are our sole priority. No distractions—just focused, dedicated support.
